Essentialism is the art of eliminating the unnecessary to simplify your life. Keep only the good and necessary. I’ve been doing a sort of “lifestyle cleanse” and it feels amazing! I cleaned out my old stuff in the room I grew up at my parents’ house. Throwing away old baggage frees you, literally and figuratively. I’ve been starting each day tackling the biggest task I want to get done that can’t wait until tomorrow. That helps me stop using social media as a crutch for boredom or avoidance (aka procrastination). Progress is not about doing more. It’s about eliminating the unnecessary so you can focus on what truly matters.

You might be wondering, why is Angelina posting this on her photography account? I apply concepts I learn from other areas to photography and vice versa. A simple background allows you to focus on what matters, the subject. Looking at a clean photo makes you feel calm & at peace. Have you ever looked at a photo with a busy background or foreground? We celebrated our anniversary this weekend. Nine y

We celebrated our anniversary this weekend. Nine years flew by! I’m grateful to have a wonderful friend and husband by my side. Fun fact: I got into photography because of him. It was his hobby originally. I bought him his dream DSLR camera for his birthday, which he loved, and which I started using more often than he did over the years 😂 I didn’t plan it like that, I swear. Years later I’m now the one showing him new camera tricks.

Usually we travel to celebrate our anniversary, but this year is different with a newborn and a pandemic. So we did the next best thing: sleeping in, a scenic walk outside, and seafood dinner.

Bonus fun fact: I loved our wedding photos so much - because we will treasure them for the rest of our lives - that it inspired me to get into wedding photography. Your wedding day is to be remembered for a long time and to be shared with your future descendants. Those photos need to be and feel joyful! I want to give that joy and ease to couples back home in Minnesota. (We got married abroad).

This week’s weather is beautiful in Minnesota! We went on a little family field trip and hiked at a state park (in my stories). The good thing about 2020 is the abundance of family time. I really enjoy days that belong to us to do as we wish, when we don’t have a schedule or obligations. Staying home and baking cookies is as enjoyable as going for a walk. Another good thing is eliminating daily commute. It gives back so much time, doesn’t it? I started going through old photos and editing things that I told myself “someday” I’ll edit. Going through them is like reliving the time when I took them. In a day it can feel like I’ve experienced several years 😂 How are you spending your newfound extra time this summer?

He’s part of a band comprised of retired guys who love to play music. You can SEE the passion and joy when they performed at this wedding. It makes me happy just observing them. Joy that’s so authentic it’s contagious - isn’t this what matters?

A retiree once told me, “I want to do what I like, not do something for money or because I have to.” He was telling me about his giant antique boathouse that he was repairing as a passion. He did it because he wanted to, because it made him happy, not out of obligation or other people’s expectations or any other reason that drives most of our behavior. I met him at a hostel called Utopia in the Guatemalan jungle where we went swimming at a beautiful waterfall and where they sold a T-shirt that said “when was the last time you did something that scared you?”

All the signs pointed to one thing: live life how you want to deep down inside. Do what brings you joy. It takes courage to live true to your heart. I find retirees inspirational because they’re free from the trap of caring about other people’s opinions & expectations, of money or society’s definition of “success”, of anything that isn’t true to who they really are. They’re too close to their own mortality to not live life the way they want, a life that maximizes joy.

That got me thinking, how much of our time & energy is spent doing something that we don’t want to do, that doesn’t make us happy, that society says we’re “supposed to”? It’s a waste of precious moments that we’ll never get back. If you start tracking the amount of time each day you’re happy doing what you like vs. dragging your feet with something you don’t want to do, what would that look like? How can you tip the scale in favor of joy?

For me, photography is one of top things I do because I want to. It brings joy and relaxation. I haven’t been shooting as much during this pandemic and my maternity leave, but editing my old galleries and running my print shop on Etsy helps me stay involved. So friends, what is something you can do that brings you joy today?

My wedding ring fit again! Finally. I took it off

My wedding ring fit again! Finally. I took it off in the 8th month of pregnancy because my body got swollen and it constricted my finger. I tried to put it on today out of curiosity. It’s refreshing to move one more step closer to feeling my normal, even as my normal is shifting.

See how I used to care enough to dress up, do my hair, put on makeup, make sure things match in this photo? It was taken when I got married. That feels like a different life chapter 🤣 Now I love yoga pants and loose T-shirts for comfort, embrace milk stains and unbrushed hair not washed for a week, skip unnecessary makeup & lotion so I have more time for sleep and breastfeeding. Relaxing showers, hot meals, and social media for entertainment are special treats rather than givens. I like this new normal, that feeling of not giving a sh*t unless something is truly as important as my baby, and very few things are. Ya know?
